| Typhoon dropped from Singapore competition. |
Date : 22nd April 2005 Source : Unspecified Author : jwcook |
In response to media queries, MINDEF confirms that it has narrowed down the selection for the next fighter replacement programme to Dassault's Rafale and Boeing's F-15. MINDEF has decided not to consider the proposal from BAE Systems any further.
The Typhoon is a very capable aircraft. However, the committed schedule for the delivery of the Typhoon and its systems did not meet the requirements of the RSAF.
It seems the Typhoon could not deliver the required syustems within the Singaporean timeframe, it remains to be seen what the requirements were.

| Flight Trials of Helmet-Mounted Display |
Date : 29th March 2005 Source : Unspecified Author : jwcook |
ROCHESTER, U.K.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 29, 2005--Flight trials of the BAE Systems Striker helmet-mounted display system have begun on the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. The full development trial sorties marked the first flights of a binocular, visor-projected, night-vision-capable helmet on a fighter aircraft.
Additional trials are planned throughout 2005, and production-ready versions of the helmet will fly in the latter part of 2005 -- clearing the way for production for Typhoon Tranche 1 and Tranche 2 aircraft.
"The successful start of flight trials marks a significant success in the Typhoon helmet program and is a milestone in the development of display helmet technology," said Mike Austill, managing director of Avionic Systems for BAE Systems.
The Typhoon helmet-mounted display is a high-resolution, binocular system driven by powerful processor and graphics modules. Its helmet tracker is a high-speed, high-accuracy, low-latency optical system. The helmet displays "virtual head-up display" symbology and video imagery from the aircraft sensors and from a helmet-mounted, image-intensified night vision system.
The helmet's fully integrated design ensures the compatibility of head protection, life support, and electro-optics, and also incorporates the fully integrated respirator for protection in nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare environments.
Prior to the start of flight trials, the helmet design passed a series of stringent tests, including impact and penetration to U.K. and European standards, 600-plus-knot windblast, and 600-plus-knot ejection. In addition, high "g" comfort and stability testing has been carried out on BAE Systems helmets supplied for the Hawk trainer aircraft.

| Eurofighter success in AMRAAM guided missile firing. |
Date : 16th March 2005 Source : Unspecified Author : jwcook |
HALLBERGMOOS, Germany, March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Eurofighter GmbH announced today the success achieved in recent Advanced Medium Range Air-Air Missile (AMRAAM) guided firing trials - a further milestone in proving the maturity of the Weapon System. Typhoon DA4, piloted by BAE Systems Chief Test Pilot Paul Hopkins with Dave Sully in the rear seat, participated in the weapons trials at the QinetiQ Deep Sea Range at Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides, and was supported by an RAF flight refuelling tanker, a Nimrod MR2 to check for surface vessels within the danger area, and by the Royal Navy, who provided the unmanned Mirach targets. The profile for this test required the Typhoon aircraft to track two targets by radar, to simulate an attack on one Mirach using a captive AMRAAM missile while simultaneously attacking the second target with an active missile. The active AMRAAM scored a direct hit on the target and destroyed it. The developing maturity of the aircraft will be further demonstrated through the planned forthcoming guided firings, which include a launch against a jamming supersonic target, a shot using tracking data from a second Typhoon through the MIDS (Multifunctional Information Distribution System) data-link, and a twin firing against two targets. Brian Phillipson, Programme Director Eurofighter GmbH, commented: "With more than 30 aircraft in service with our four Nations, and further deliveries now being made weekly, it is important that we steadily release more and more capability to our partner air forces as they build up their fleets and their experience. This complex firing is another successful achievement in our continuing development programme, another example of the progressive capability demonstration and clearance our customers are expecting from us. It is also another demonstration of the tremendous capability of the Eurofighter compared to previous generations of combat aircraft." Images

| MTU Develops New DECMU for EJ200 |
Date : 13th December 2004 Source : Unspecified Author : jwcook |
MTU Aero Engines
MUNICH, Germany --- The Eurofighter's EJ200 engine is the most advanced in its class worldwide, providing the combat aircraft with breathtaking agility. Starting with Tranche 2, the powerplant comes with a new control system. That system is being developed, under the roof of the Eurojet engine consortium, by MTU Aero Engines in partnership with German, Spanish and British hardware suppliers and with Rolls-Royce Bristol, who provides the software. With this activity, Germany's leading engine manufacturer has landed yet another development contract. The EJ200's digital engine control unit (DECU) is being recreated as a digital engine control and monitoring unit (DECMU). "The new system is the finest money can buy. It again testifies to the high level of expertise we bring to this area," says Franz Buckl, who heads the testing and control effort at MTU. The DECMU's unique feature is that it marries control and monitoring functions in a single unit. Before, it used to take two different systems to achieve the same purpose. The new unit is more flexible and cost-effective than the two predecessor systems taken together, although size and reliability remain the same. But chalk up one more for the DECMU: it will readily accommodate foreseeable engine modifications including thrust vectoring, if adopted. Also, existing engines can optionally be retrofitted with it at relatively modest effort.
Cheers
